Where the documents stand
MIL-R-83485 covered fluorocarbon O-rings with improved performance at low temperature, a separate line from the general-purpose MIL-R-83248. DLA ASSIST records it cancelled on 2002-10-23 and names SAE-AMS-R-83485/1 as its successor; SAE's material document AMS-R-83485 is current at revision A of 2014-05-28. SAE later published AMS7287, a fluorocarbon 70 to 80 document for low-temperature sealing, current at revision A of 2022-09-08, and manufacturers' cross-references now cite AMS7287 for the M83485/1 part with AMS-R-83485 and MIL-R-83485 as the previous documents.
Two things to keep straight: 83485 is a fluorocarbon, not a fluorosilicone (the fluorosilicone family is 25988), and MIL-DTL-83485 does not exist on DLA ASSIST. A print that reads M83485/1 is quoted against AMS-R-83485 with AMS7287 as the compound the manufacturers now produce to.
The base polymer
The polymer behind this family is fluorocarbon (FKM), low-temperature grade. The Parker O-Ring Handbook ORD 5700 family range on file for VitonĀ® (FKM) is -26 C to 204 C; that is the polymer family's range, not this document's requirement, and the compound sheet for the qualified grade governs. Parker notes that specification temperature limits do not necessarily represent operating temperature limits.

How we quote this family
Send the designator as printed, M83485/1-XXX, with the dash, the quantity and the certification the order needs. We quote it supplied against AMS-R-83485, in the low-temperature fluorocarbon compound the document calls for (manufacturers now produce it to AMS7287), with a certificate of conformance and lot traceability. Tell us if your print or approved source list requires the AMS7287 callout specifically.

Frequently asked
Is M83485/1 a fluorosilicone O-ring?
No. MIL-R-83485 is a fluorocarbon (FKM) document with improved performance at low temperature; the fluorosilicone family is MIL-DTL-25988 and the M25988 slash sheets. Both are oil and fuel service polymers, but they are different materials with different compound documents. Quote the one the print names.
What replaced MIL-R-83485?
DLA ASSIST records MIL-R-83485 cancelled on 2002-10-23 and superseded by SAE-AMS-R-83485/1; the SAE material document AMS-R-83485 is current at revision A of 2014. Manufacturers now cite SAE-AMS7287A (2022) for the same part, with AMS-R-83485 and MIL-R-83485 noted as the previous documents. The M83485/1 callout stays valid on drawings.
What durometer is an M83485/1 O-ring?
Manufacturers supply it at 75; Parker ORD 5700 (2021) lists its VM835-75 against AMS-R-83485 in the 70 to 80 band, and AMS7287's title also reads 70 to 80. Confirm the durometer against your print.
What is AMS7287?
An SAE fluorocarbon (FKM) compound document, 70 to 80 hardness, for low-temperature sealing, current at revision A of 2022-09-08. Its title states a glass-transition requirement, which is what distinguishes it from the general-purpose AMS7276. Manufacturers' cross-references pair the M83485/1 part with it.
Is there a QPL for M83485/1?
None on record. The cancelled MIL-R-83485 shows no qualified products list on DLA ASSIST, and the SAE pages for AMS-R-83485 and AMS7287 do not state one. Manufacturers produce to the document and certify to it; we supply the part with that certificate of conformance.
