O-ring material
Viton® (FKM) O-Rings
Viton (FKM) O-rings are the fluoroelastomer seal for petroleum oils, fuels and aggressive chemicals at temperatures nitrile cannot take. The Parker® O-Ring Handbook (ORD 5700) rates standard FKM from -26 C to 204 C, with low-temperature grades to -46 C. Conquest supplies Viton and equivalent FKM O-rings in every AS568 and metric size, from commercial 75 Shore A to compounds made to AMS7276 by listed manufacturers.

Service temperatures here are the family figures published in Parker O-Ring Handbook ORD 5700A/US §2.2; the compound datasheet and your application govern the final choice.
Larger and non-standard sizes: an O-ring beyond the molded size lists can be supplied as a spliced and vulcanized O-ring, which the maker joins from cord of the same compound. That page lists, family by family, which makers offer the compound as cord, and what to send for a quote.
What FKM is, and whether Viton is the same thing
FKM is the ASTM D1418 designation for fluoroelastomers, the family of fluorine-containing rubbers used where a seal meets oil, fuel or solvent at elevated temperature. Viton is a polymer trademark owned by The Chemours Company; a molder buys the raw polymer and compounds it, so "genuine Viton" on a print fixes where the polymer came from, not who made the ring. A print that says FKM accepts any qualified fluoroelastomer compound. FPM is the same material in older European usage, and FFKM (perfluoroelastomer) is a separate, costlier family covered on the FFKM page.
FKM grades by designation
The letters after the trade name are the polymer maker's grade families. They differ in monomer mix, fluorine content and cure system; the compound datasheet names the grade, while most prints name only FKM and a hardness, or an AMS document. The temperature figures below are the Parker O-Ring Handbook (ORD 5700) family range, and a grade's own datasheet governs.
| Designation | Polymer type | Typically chosen for | Temperature range (Parker ORD 5700) |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Dipolymer, the general-purpose type | Engine and gearbox oils, fuels, general chemical service | -26 C to 204 C |
| B | Terpolymer, higher fluorine content than A | Wider fluid resistance, including some oxygenated fuels | -26 C to 204 C |
| F | Terpolymer, the highest fluorine content of the standard grades | Aggressive fuels and fuel blends where swell governs | -26 C to 204 C |
| GF | Peroxide-cured terpolymer | Steam, hot water, acids and aggressive lubricating oils (peroxide cure); bases and amines still need the ETP type | -26 C to 204 C |
| GLT | Low-temperature type | Cold-start fuel and oil systems | -46 C to 204 C (low-temperature grades) |
| GFLT | Low-temperature peroxide-cured terpolymer | Cold service with the chemical breadth of GF | -46 C to 204 C (low-temperature grades) |
| ETP | Base-resistant type (ethylene, TFE and perfluoromethyl vinyl ether) | Amine-containing oils, ketones, strong bases, broad chemical exposure | -26 C to 204 C |
Grade descriptions are qualitative and follow the polymer maker's nomenclature; they are not a compatibility rating. The chemical compatibility guide covers the media, and the quote names the compound your print or your engineering specifies and sends its datasheet.

Military and AMS callouts that specify FKM
Aerospace and OEM prints rarely say "Viton"; they name a material document, and the document status matters because the military originals are cancelled while parts are still ordered by the old numbers. The statuses below are read from the DLA ASSIST and SAE Mobilus records (read 2026-09-06).
| Callout | Part standard or family | Status (read 2026-09-06) |
|---|---|---|
| MIL-R-83248/1 (M83248/1-xxx) | Replaced by SAE AS83248/1, an O-ring molded from AMS7276 material | Cancelled 2008; the part number is still ordered (DLA ASSIST) |
| MIL-R-83248/2 (M83248/2-xxx) | Replaced by SAE AS3581, the AMS7259 O-ring | Cancelled (DLA ASSIST) |
| SAE AMS7276 | AS3208, AS3209, AS83248/1 | Active; qualified products list held by SAE (DLA ASSIST) |
| SAE AMS7259 | AS3581 | Active; qualified products list held by SAE (DLA ASSIST) |
| SAE AMS7287 | Per print | Current revision A (2022); low-temperature FKM, a -30 C glass transition stated in the title (SAE Mobilus) |
| SAE AMS-R-83248 | M83248/1 and M83248/2 families | SAE re-issue of the cancelled MIL spec, revision A 2005 (SAE Mobilus) |
The dash number after the slash sheet is the AS568 size, so an M83248/1-214 is a fluoroelastomer ring in size -214: the AS568 size chart carries the dimensions, and the M83248, AMS7276 and AMS7280 guides decode the documents. Parts to these documents are made by manufacturers on the relevant qualified products list; Conquest supplies them with the certificate of conformance and, where the order calls for it, AS9102 first-article documentation.
Where Viton O-rings work, and where they fail
| Medium or condition | Verdict | Note (Parker O-Ring Handbook ORD 5700) |
|---|---|---|
| Engine, gearbox, hydraulic oil | Excellent | The core FKM application |
| Gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, aromatic and alcohol blends | Excellent | Additives that swell nitrile |
| Chlorinated solvents, aromatics | Excellent | FFKM for the most aggressive streams |
| Ozone, weathering, vacuum | Excellent | Saturated backbone; low permeability |
| Hot water and steam | Poor in standard grades | EPDM, or a peroxide-cured GF-type grade |
| Ketones, amines, glycol brake fluid | Not recommended | EPDM for ketones and brake fluid; ETP-type or FFKM for amines |
| Cold below about -26 C | Standard grades stiffen | Low-temperature grade, fluorosilicone or silicone |
Sizes and forms we supply
All 369 AS568 sizes (349 general-purpose dash sizes plus the 20 boss-seal sizes) and the ISO 3601 metric series, in the durometers listed above; O-ring cord for rings spliced and vulcanized by the maker in odd diameters (static service only); and X-rings and backup rings in the same families. The AS568 chart and the metric chart carry the dimensions, and the dash number guide explains the numbering.
How FKM compares with its neighbors
| Material | Parker ORD 5700 range | Where FKM wins | Where it loses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nitrile (NBR) | -34 C to 100 C | Heat, aromatic fuels, solvents, ozone | Cold flexibility |
| HNBR | -32 C to 149 C | Heat above 149 C, solvents | Cold |
| EPDM | -57 C to 150 C | Any petroleum product | Steam, brake fluid, ketones |
| Fluorosilicone (FVMQ) | -73 C to 177 C | Dynamic service, heat above 177 C | Cold fuel systems |
| FFKM | -26 C to 320 C; maker grade sheets to 327 C | Cold, availability | Ketones, amines, steam, heat above 204 C |
| Aflas® (FEPM) | -9 C to 232 C | Fuels, aromatics, cold | Sour gas, amines, steam |
Where Viton fits
Where the medium is petroleum-based or chemically aggressive and the temperature exceeds what nitrile handles; the nitrile vs FKM comparison draws that line. For steam or brake fluid, EPDM (see EPDM vs FKM); for dry heat with no oil, or extreme cold, silicone (see FKM vs silicone); for ketones, amines and the most aggressive streams, FFKM (see FFKM vs FKM). A specification's temperature limit is a test condition, not an operating limit; the compound datasheet governs. A certificate of conformance ships with every order; the cure date is on the label, and the shelf-life guide explains how both are read.

Frequently asked
Is a Viton O-ring the same as an FKM O-ring?
FKM is the material family under ASTM D1418 and Viton is one polymer maker's trademark for its FKM. A print that says FKM accepts any qualified fluoroelastomer compound; one that says "genuine Viton" is asking for Chemours polymer, not a particular molder.
Which Viton grade should the print name?
Most prints name FKM and a hardness, or an AMS document, and leave the grade to the compound. If the print names only FKM, name the compound or the specification you want quoted; we cross-reference it and send its datasheet, and the choice stays with your print.
Which durometer?
75 Shore A is the FKM default; 90 A grades resist extrusion at high pressure and rapid gas decompression. See the durometer guide.
Can Viton O-rings handle steam?
Standard grades cannot; the Parker handbook lists hot water and steam among their failure modes. Peroxide-cured GF-type grades exist, and EPDM is the usual fit for steam.
Why did my Viton O-ring fail in acetone?
Ketones swell standard FKM heavily; the handbook's compatibility notes put acetone and MEK among the media that defeat it. EPDM or FFKM is the material there.
What does AMS7276 add over commercial FKM?
Qualification: the compound has passed the document's fuel, oil, heat and compression-set tests at a listed manufacturer, and the part ships with a certificate. The AMS7276 guide covers the document.
Are mil-spec Viton O-rings different from commercial ones?
Same polymer family. A qualified part is made by a manufacturer on the qualified products list to the document's tests and ships with a certificate of conformance; a commercial ring is not a substitute without the print's permission.
Which FKM type for amine-containing engine oils?
A base-resistant grade (the ETP type); standard copolymers are attacked by amines. Name the oil on the request.
How cold can a Viton O-ring go?
Standard grades are rated to -26 C on the Parker range and stiffen below it; low-temperature grades (the GLT and GFLT types) reach -46 C on the Parker range, and AMS7287 states a -30 C glass transition in its title. Below that, fluorosilicone or silicone.
Does an FKM O-ring need a special groove?
No. Standard AS568 sizes and standard gland dimensions apply; the groove design guide and the squeeze guide cover the numbers.
What color is Viton?
Brown is the traditional color, but FKM compounds are made in several colors and color proves nothing. The compound number on the certificate identifies the material.
