Mil-spec O-ring family, fluorocarbon, 75 and 90 hardness
M83248 O-rings: fluorocarbon 75 (/1) and 90 (/2) to AMS7276 and AMS7259
M83248/1-XXX is a fluorocarbon (FKM) O-ring at Class 1, 75 hardness, and M83248/2-XXX is the same polymer at Class 2, 90 hardness, each in the AS568 size the dash names. MIL-R-83248 is cancelled: the compounds are now SAE-AMS7276 (70 to 80) and SAE-AMS7259 (85 to 95), with SAE-AS83248/1 as the /1 drawing and SAE-AS3581 as the /2 drawing. Both AMS documents are Active and carry SAE non-government qualified products lists.

Designator to AS568 size
M83248/1-XXX and M83248/2-XXX are the AS568-XXX size, per the manufacturers' cross-references; the slash sheet changes the hardness class, never the size. Parker's own ordering example for a specification part is M83248/1-325. The AMS7276 boss sizes carry the separate AS3208-YY designator.

Millimeter values are converted from the inch table. The dash is a size lookup and never a material; the same dash on another family on the mil-spec hub is the same size in a different document. Full chart: AS568 size chart.
Where the documents stand
MIL-R-83248 replaced MIL-R-25897 (cancelled 1980-09-25 with the note to use MIL-R-83248) as the high-temperature, fluid and compression-set resistant fluorocarbon document. DLA ASSIST records MIL-R-83248 cancelled on 2001-06-21 and names four SAE successors in its title: AMS7276 and AMS3216 for the 70 to 80 class, AMS7259 and AMS3218 for the 85 to 95 class. The /1 size sheet followed on 2008-07-24, superseded by SAE-AS83248/1, whose title reads O-ring molded from AMS7276 material; the /2 sheet was cancelled in favor of SAE-AS3581 and SAE-AMS7259. SAE keeps a parallel material document, AMS-R-83248, at revision A of 2005.
The result is a pair of numbers for each class: AS83248/1 plus AMS7276 for the 75 hardness part, AS3581 plus AMS7259 for the 90. Both AMS compounds are Active and carry SAE non-government qualified products lists. A print that still reads M83248/1 or M83248/2 is quoted against those pairs.
The base polymer
The polymer behind this family is fluorocarbon (FKM). The Parker O-Ring Handbook ORD 5700 family range on file for VitonĀ® (FKM) is -26 C to 204 C; that is the polymer family's range, not this document's requirement, and the compound sheet for the qualified grade governs. Parker notes that specification temperature limits do not necessarily represent operating temperature limits.

How we quote this family
Send the designator as printed, M83248/1-XXX or M83248/2-XXX, with the dash, the quantity and the certification the order needs. The /1 part is quoted supplied against AS83248/1 in an AMS7276 compound and the /2 part against AS3581 in an AMS7259 compound, made by manufacturers on the SAE qualified products lists, with a certificate of conformance and lot traceability. If the print names a compound number, include it and we quote that compound.

Frequently asked
What material and durometer is an M83248/1 O-ring?
Fluorocarbon (FKM) at Class 1, 75 hardness, as the MIL-R-83248/1 title prints it. The compound document today is SAE-AMS7276, whose hardness class is 70 to 80, and the drawing is SAE-AS83248/1A, an O-ring molded from AMS7276 material. Parker ORD 5700 (2021) pairs V0747-75, V1164-75 and V1226-75 with the Class 1 line.
What is the difference between M83248/1 and M83248/2 O-rings?
Hardness class. /1 is Class 1 at 75 and /2 is Class 2 at 90, both fluorocarbon, both in the same AS568 sizes. Their successors differ too: /1 goes to AS83248/1 with AMS7276, /2 goes to AS3581 with AMS7259 (85 to 95). Parker ORD 5700 (2021) pairs V0709-90 with the Class 2 line.
What does AMS7276 specify for an O-ring?
A fluorocarbon (FKM) compound in the 70 to 80 hardness class, high-temperature and fluid resistant with low compression set, for seals in fuel systems and specific engine oil systems, per the document title on DLA ASSIST (the SAE Mobilus title reads very low compression set). It is Active and carries an SAE non-government qualified products list. It is the material behind AS83248/1, AS3209 and AS3208.
Which mil-spec O-ring is fluorocarbon 75 durometer for fuel and high temperature?
M83248/1, quoted today against AS83248/1 with AMS7276 as the compound. AS3209-XXX is the SAE size sheet on the same AMS7276 material for standard sizes, and AS3208-YY the boss sizes. If the print needs 90 hardness, the family's /2 sheet and AS3581 on AMS7259 cover it.
What is AS83248/1?
SAE's replacement drawing for MIL-R-83248/1, titled O-ring molded from AMS7276 material, reaffirmed at revision A on 2021-11-08. It carries the sizes; AMS7276 carries the compound. A print that reads M83248/1-214 is the same part quoted against AS83248/1 with AMS7276.
