Wool Felt Gasket Material

Pressed wool felt is a dense, absorbent sheet cut into wipers, wicks, dust seals, polishing pads and vibration pads. The SAE J314 grades, F-1 through F-26, set wool content and density. Felt soaks up water, so felt parts are cut dry by a cutting partner rather than on our waterjet, and quoted from the same drawing.

What felt is used for

Felt is not a pressure gasket. It is the sheet for oil wicks and wipers on shafts and ways, dust and grease seals on bearings and covers, polishing and buffing pads, and pads that damp vibration or protect a finish. The high-wool, high-density grades such as F-1 wear longest and hold the most oil; the lower grades are softer and cheaper [S2].

The SAE J314 grade on the print sets wool content and density, and the cited felt is rated for service from -62 C to 93 C [S4]. Oils are fine; water and steam swell and weaken it. For a weather or dust seal that must shed water, use closed-cell sponge.

Why felt is cut dry

The waterjet soaks felt, and a wet felt part takes days to dry and may shrink or distort, so felt parts are cut dry by the sheet maker or a cutting partner and quoted from the same DXF or drawing. Send the grade, the thickness and the quantity; if no drawing exists, send a photo of the part beside a ruler, or the sample, and a Conquest representative tells you what is needed to quote it.

How we cut it

Felt, mica and flexible graphite are the sheets on this index that do not go on our waterjet: the jet wets felt, and open-cell felt holds the water. Felt parts are cut dry on a knife or die by a cutting partner, and quoted from a DXF, DWG or PDF like a waterjet gasket. Name the SAE J314 grade, the thickness and the quantity, and say whether an adhesive backing is wanted; adhesive-backed felt is cut with the liner on.

Where Wool Felt is used, and the usual alternatives

Frequently asked

What do the SAE felt grades mean?

SAE J314 grades set minimum wool content and density. F-1 is 95 percent wool at the highest density; the numbers rise as wool content and density fall, down to F-26 at 45 percent wool.

Which grade should a wiper or wick use?

F-1 and F-5 are the usual grades for wipers and wicks that see wear and must hold oil, and F-10 and softer grades for cushions and pads; the print names the grade.

Why is felt not waterjet-cut?

Felt absorbs water and takes days to dry. Felt parts are cut dry on a knife or die by a cutting partner and quoted from the same drawing.

How hot can felt run?

The cited felt is rated from -62 C to 93 C. Keep it away from steam and hot water.

Can felt come with adhesive?

Yes. Adhesive-backed felt is cut with the liner on so the pad peels and places.

Upload a DXF, DWG or PDF of the gasket with the quote request, or a photo of the part with a ruler if no drawing exists. Add the sheet thickness, the durometer or grade, the quantity and whether adhesive backing is wanted. These parts are cut by the sheet maker or a cutting partner and quoted from your drawing; a Conquest representative replies.
