Butyl Rubber Gasket Material
Butyl rubber is a sheet with very low gas permeability, so it is the gasket for vacuum chambers, air-tight enclosures, brake-fluid and glycol systems and hot-water joints. We cut it to your drawing on the waterjet, which it takes better than a die.

What butyl seals
Butyl holds gases that leak through other rubbers, which makes it the gasket for vacuum systems, inflatable and air-tight enclosures, and instrument housings that must keep moisture out. It resists ozone, weather, hot water, steam at moderate temperature, glycol coolants and brake fluid, and it damps vibration well. Petroleum oils and fuels swell it, so those joints go to nitrile.
The cited sheet is rated -40 C to 82 C in 40 to 70 A [S1, S2]. Where the joint runs hotter in water or steam, EPDM is the next step; where weather resistance matters but gas permeability does not, neoprene costs less.
Callouts and cutting
ASTM D2000 line callouts for butyl sit in the AA type-class, for example M1AA 507, 607 and 710 for the 50, 60 and 70 A sheets [S1]. Butyl is gummy and sticks to a steel-rule die, which is one reason it belongs on the waterjet: the jet cuts it clean at any gauge with no tooling.

Why choose butyl over other rubbers?
Its gas permeability is very low. Vacuum, air-tight and moisture-proof joints are where it earns its cost.
Does butyl take oil?
No. Petroleum oils and fuels swell it. Use nitrile for those.
How hot can a butyl gasket run?
The cited sheet is rated to 82 C, with a low limit of -40 C. EPDM goes hotter in water and steam.
What durometers are available?
40, 50, 60 and 70 Shore A. 60 A is the usual flange sheet; 40 A conforms to rough faces; 70 A resists extrusion.
Is butyl hard to cut?
On a die, yes: it is tacky. On the waterjet it cuts clean, and the thickness your print names is confirmed on the quote.
